What thickness of drywall should I use?

1/2 inch is standard for walls and ceilings with 16-inch stud spacing. 5/8 inch is required for ceilings with 24-inch joist spacing and for fire-rated walls (like between a garage and living space). 1/4 inch is used for curved walls. Moisture-resistant (green board) or mold-resistant (purple board) is recommended for bathrooms.
